Preliminary Moves

"You will be attending a ceremony tomorrow for this man," he instructor says, producing a card from his pocket and holding it our for the boy to take.
The boy holds it by the edges and glances at the name embossed on it. "What sort of ceremony?" he asks, uncertainly.
"It is like an interview, or a showcase. I want you to show him some of your very best work. It is imperative you are among those selected for the position."
This is something of a novel, as the boy has never before been permitted, let alone encouraged, to do the things he has done in his lessons in front of people. His instructor often expresses that he should never, under any circumstances, exhibit his abilities to anyone.
"What if I don't get it?" The boy asks.
"That is highly unlikely. You are one of my best students. He would have to be blind not to select you."
