There are no signs in the circus. No text on pieces of paper
or hanging planks of painted wood. No silver words on black or black words on
white. There is no indication of what lies beyond the curtain of a tent or the
door of a caravan. They are only recognizable by the colour of the canvas and
small illustrated pictures the size of a postcard that hang from doorways and
openings. Nevertheless, patrons discover names for them, christening the tents
in order to refer to them in passing or as suggestions to friendly patrons they
pass. Many are delighted later to find signs made and hanging above tents they
have visited, engraved with the name they have bestowed.
